Our Story

Then…

The chapters that led me to this point could not be farther from where I am now. They included beauty course student, successful career in property, a stint of living in Dubai, and lots of fun as a bit of a wild child. I had a penchant for designer handbags and lots of clothes. Material possessions were high on my list of priorities. Fast forward to the present day and life couldn’t be more different.

Now…

I am a mother to two boys and proud founder of Midz Plastic Free. I am a big advocate for sustainability and a plastic free lifestyle. However, like so many of the most significant chapters we find ourselves in as adults, this one took me by surprise.

How…

In July 2019, I took a closer look at the ingredients of my hair products. I fell into a rabbit hole of information on SLA, parabens and many everyday ingredients that unsettled me more and more. I then researched sulphate free options and investigated natural based products as alternatives to harsh chemicals. Little did I know that this information would lead me into the realms of an eco-friendly, plastic free way of life.

A couple of months later, I joined a friend on her market stall at Alexandra Palace Farmer’s Market. I started to sell a small amount of essential eco friendly, vegan and plastic free products. Customers welcomed the concept. Many of the older generation, being from an era that discouraged wastefulness, loved the idea, nostalgic about the string shopping bags, apparently a thing in the 70’s. The enthusiastic younger customers genuinely wanted to make a difference. I recognised a need for more eco-friendly, affordable alternatives to the current everyday options.

A Christmas trip to the Philippines reinforced to me why it’s vital for us all to try and reverse the damage we have done. The islands we visited were truly breathtaking. Snorkelling with my then 7 year old in crystal blue water, so clear you could see blue starfish clinging to the rocks and the bright coral beneath us. I knew I had to do my bit to ensure my children and future generations would also be lucky enough to enjoy Nature’s true beauty.

We can’t continue to drown in the sea of plastic that is currently being consumed and pumped into our oceans. This is not ok.

Wow…

I started my MidzPlasticFree Instagram account to document this new journey and to collect tips from the ever growing plastic free tribe that continues to thrive. When the pandemic hit the UK in Spring 2020, effectively closing our beloved little market stall, we had to take a new approach. We began to sell online. Since then, I have been truly blown away the the response. I am so grateful for the support and loyalty already shown and I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your trust in me. We all realise that the goal is not perfection, just simply better choices. Becoming vegan may not be for you, but a switch to nut milk be an option you are comfortable with. It’s realistic to start with those small switches, say, a bamboo toothbrush when our plastic ones wear out, a little more thought with purchases so they are sustainable and built to last. For me, thinking before buying was a significant adjustment. I question myself if something is really needed before I buy it, then answer myself truthfully.

As a society we are programmed to consume and I was definitely part of this culture years ago, buying shocking amounts of clothes! Yet most just sat looking pretty in my wardrobe, tags intact and never to see the light of day, just biding their time there until they were relocated to the charity shop. Gradual changes here and there still add up to a huge difference. Awareness makes a difference. It is a huge ask to be 100% at anything, and let’s face it, none of us are perfect at anything. But, by putting a little thought into the purchases we make, we, as consumers do have the power to change the world…and that is a fabulous reason to give it a go.
